What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a self-defense martial art that emphasizes ground fighting. The goal of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is to control and subdue an opponent by using techniques that force them to submit, or "tap out." These techniques can be used to defend against an attacker, even if the defender is at a disadvantage in terms of size or strength.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu traces its origins to the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo, which was brought to Brazil in the early 20th century by Mitsuyo Maeda. Maeda, who was also known as Count Koma, was a noted judoka and pioneer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He taught the art to Carlos Gracie, who went on to teach it to his brothers. The Gracie brothers then opened the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in 1925.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gained international prominence in the 1990s, thanks in large part to the success of the Gracie family in mixed martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The early years of the UFC matched style versus style, with different martial artists from different disciplines pitted against each other to see which art was most effective. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu quickly proved itself as a superior self-defense system, and has since become one of the most popular martial arts in the world.

Other than just being a great martial art for self-defense, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent workout and can help you build strength, flexibility, and stamina. It is also a great way to relieve stress and meet new people.
